Visual Anything· How it works

How it works

Every feature, in plain words

Everything Visual Anything does, from your first map to the last setting. Open the app to try any of it.

Start a graph

Everything starts with + New at the top, the Ask box at the bottom, or dropping files on the window.

A GitHub repo

Paste a public GitHub link (like github.com/owner/repo). Folders become branches, files become nodes, and lines between code files follow their imports. It checks for new commits every two minutes and updates the map when you push.

A folder or an Obsidian vault

Pick a folder on your computer. Each note or file becomes a node, and links between your notes ([[like this]]) become lines. Logseq graphs and Graphify graphs (graphify-out/graph.json) open the same way. The map follows the folder as files change: within a second in the desktop app, every few seconds in Chrome and Edge. Other browsers take a one-time copy.

Paste or import

No files? Paste an indented outline (each line goes under the one above it), A -> B lines (one link per line), a CSV list of links, or Markdown.

Any topic, with Ask AI

Type a topic or a question in the box at the bottom and the AI draws it as a map: the topic, its main parts, then the details under each.

Drop it in

Drag a folder or files anywhere onto the window to open them.

Explore it

A map is meant to be moved around, opened up and read.

2D or 3D

Switch at the top: 2D is flat, 3D lets you turn the map around. Drag to move, scroll to zoom.

Focus on one node

Click a node to see it and what it connects to, close up. Settings › General › Focus depth sets how many steps around it show (1, 2, 3 or all).

Read it

Clicking a node opens its note beside the map (you can turn that off in Settings; a double-click always opens it). A note shows its text and its parts; a code file shows its code, with the lines you came for lit up.

Imports

Point at a code file to see what it imports and what imports it. Customize › Show can draw every import line at once.

Big folders

A folder with over 200 files folds into one bubble so the map stays calm. Right-click it and choose Open folder, or set Customize › Show to show every file always.

Home

Every graph you make is kept on Home: search them, sort by name or last edited, open one or start a new one.

Understand a code project

Made for anyone building software - including with AI - who wants to see what a project actually is.

Files or Design

For a followed folder or repo, switch between Files (the project by folder) and Design (top left). Design sorts every file by what it does - Screens & UI, State & logic, Data & storage, Server & API, Sign-in, Payments, AI, Helpers, Build & config, Tests - and shows the technologies its files use under each part: React, Stripe, Supabase, Tailwind and many more, read from the imports. A line joins a file to another part only where it reaches into it, like a payments file talking to the database.

Live while you build

Open the project folder and leave it open: every file that is written appears on the map in its place, every file that is removed fades out, and the view widens to keep the whole project in sight.

Notes and code together

Customize › Show can draw a dashed line from a note to each code file it names, so your docs and your code sit on one map.

History

See how a graph was made, change by change - for a repo or folder, its recent history too.

Grow

Replay a graph being built, branch by branch.

Ask AI

An AI that answers by drawing, and works on the map you have open.

Ask about anything

Type a topic and it draws a map you can keep asking about. Attach files (lecture notes, slides, a PDF) with the paperclip, or drop them on the box, and ask for a map of them.

Ask about your graph

With a graph open, the box works on it: what is this repo about, how is login connected to the database, add the moons of Mars, group these by theme.

Right-click a node

How is this connected to… draws the path between two nodes. What is this group? explains a branch.

Undo

Every answer is one step: Ctrl+Z takes the whole answer back.

What it costs

You can try it 3 times on the website without an account. Then sign in with Google (free) for about 70 graphs a week. Pro gives five times that for US$5 a month, or US$50 a year. Inviting a friend gives you both a week of Pro.

Out of the way

Settings › AI can show the Ask box only when you point at the bottom of the window. Its answers stay either way.

With Claude, Cursor and other AI tools

Your own AI assistant can work on your maps too, on your own plan.

Connect Claude

In the desktop app, Settings › AI › Connect Claude sets up Claude Desktop and Claude Code in one click. Then three steps: connect, open the folder Claude works in, and ask Claude something.

What Claude can do

Read the open map, draw a new one, change it, and point you to a file - it lights up on the map. Every file Claude Code edits pulses as it works.

Codex, Cursor and others

They can connect the same way, with one command or setting (Settings › AI shows it).

Any AI chat

⋯ › Copy as outline copies a short written map of your graph - its tree, its links and what its notes say - to paste into ChatGPT, Claude or any chat.

Change it by hand

Everything the AI can do, you can do yourself.

Link two nodes

Right-drag from one node to another.

A node

Right-click it: its colour, its size, Focus, or Delete.

A link

Right-click it: give it a label, arrows (pointing either way, or both), or Remove link. Clicking a link does nothing, and dragging never breaks one.

Several at once

Drag a box around nodes to select them: resize them together, drag them together, or delete them (Ctrl+Z brings them back).

Write notes

Open a node you made and press Edit: Markdown formats as you type - **bold**, # headings, lists, checkboxes - and Ctrl+S saves.

Edit a folder or vault

In the desktop app, turn on Edit the files for a connected folder or vault: then your edits change the real notes, renaming keeps [[links]] working, drawing a line adds a [[link]], and deleting moves the file to the Recycle Bin. It is off until you turn it on, and code files are never changed.

Make it yours

The map looks how you want; it is saved with each graph.

Customize › Look

Eight background colours. One colour, a colour per level, or a colour per main branch (in a repo, per top folder). Colour every node whose name or path holds a word, like .md or auth. Node size from small to huge.

Customize › Show

Show only the nodes that match a search. Folders as nodes or only the files (like Obsidian). Nodes with no links. Labels on each main area when zoomed out. Import lines, and lines from notes to code.

Settings › Graph

Colours and sizes for each level, names on or off, link thickness, opacity and length, and the forces that spread the map. Reset look and Shuffle layout start over.

Keep, save and share

Your graphs are saved as you go, on your own device.

Save as image

A picture of the map. It carries a small Made with Visual Anything mark, which Pro can turn off.

Save as notes

Turn a graph into a folder of Markdown notes with [[links]], ready for Obsidian or any notes app.

Backups

Settings › Your graphs › Export saves every graph to one file; Import brings them back - to move to another computer, or just to be safe.

Small window

In the desktop app, keep a map in a small window that stays on top while you work.

Private by design

Your work stays yours.

On your device

Graphs and notes are stored on your computer, with no cloud sync and no account needed for them.

What leaves it

Only when you use Ask AI: what you type, any files you add, and the parts of the graph it needs to answer go to Anthropic's Claude to write the answer. They are not stored, unless you report an answer.

Offline mode

Turn it on in Settings › General and nothing leaves your computer: folders and vaults work as usual, while GitHub and Ask AI are switched off.

Payments

Card details go to Stripe, never to us.

Mouse and keyboard

The few things worth knowing by heart.

Drag

Move the map (2D) or turn it (3D).

Scroll

Zoom in and out.

Right-drag

Link one node to another.

Ctrl+Z

Undo - including a whole AI answer.

Delete

Delete what is selected.

Ctrl+S / Esc

Save or close a note you are writing.

Website or desktop app

The same app in both places, with a few things only the desktop app can do.

On the website

Everything above, in Chrome, Edge, Safari or Firefox. A folder follows its changes in Chrome and Edge.

In the desktop app (Windows)

Folders update within a second, Edit the files, Connect Claude, the small window, and opening files in VS Code or Obsidian. Coming to the Microsoft Store.
