Codebase maps / vuejs/core

The Vue codebase, as a map.

Vue 3's repository splits the framework into a compiler and a runtime, each made of small packages. Here is what each one does - and the whole repository as a map you can open and explore.

The Vue repository as a map: every folder and file, grouped by package

How Vue is organized

Vue is a progressive JavaScript framework for building user interfaces on the web. These are the parts of its repository, and what each one does.

packages/vue

The package you install: the public "full build", with both the runtime and the compiler inside.

packages/reactivity

The reactivity system - ref, reactive, computed. It works on its own too, without the rest of Vue.

packages/runtime-core

The platform-agnostic core: the virtual DOM renderer, how components work, and the JavaScript APIs. Custom renderers are built on it.

packages/runtime-dom

The runtime for the browser: the native DOM API, attributes, properties and event handlers.

packages/compiler-core

The platform-agnostic compiler core: the extensible base that turns templates into render functions, with its plugins.

packages/compiler-dom

The compiler with extra plugins made for the browser.

packages/compiler-sfc

Lower-level tools for compiling .vue Single File Components - what bundler plugins such as vue-loader use.

Server rendering

packages/compiler-ssr writes render functions optimized for the server, and packages/server-renderer renders them to HTML.

Where to start reading

Open these in the live map - click a file to read it beside the map, and point at it to see what it imports.

  1. packages/reactivity/src/ref.ts - ref() - the smallest piece of reactive state
  2. packages/reactivity/src/reactive.ts - reactive() - whole objects that track every change
  3. packages/runtime-core/src/renderer.ts - the renderer: how a change makes its way onto the page
  4. packages/compiler-core/src/parser.ts - where a template is first read

Good to know

Is this the official Vue repository?

Yes: github.com/vuejs/core is where Vue 3 is developed. Each part above is described from the project's own contributing guide.

Is the map up to date?

The live map reads the repository when you open it, so it always shows the current code. The picture on this page was made on October 28, 2026.

Can I map my own project like this?

Yes. Paste any public GitHub link, or open a folder on your computer - your own code never leaves your device.
